Whose development?

Hey ppl,

Thanks to all who have revived this blog. One hopes that the interest and enthusiasm will sustain!

I figured we could kick start our discussion with an honest soul searching about what development means to us. We volunteer for an organization that goes by the Association for India's Development. But,
What is Development? Is it a means to a better life or just better life?
Whose Development? Is development germane only to/for the underprivileged? Is the current urban euphoria in India unjustified?
Why Development? Why should one bother about Development? Is development in your or my hands?

My job was easy. I only had to raise the questions! Its your turn to chip in with your 2 cents!

Actually a lot of times development is associated with more material goods, greater degree of comfort, etc. However, in recent times social scientists have started proposing the theory that what matters in the end is the happiness quotient of the population and that they have found is not as dependent on factors normally associated with development. A very good case is the people of Burma were actually found to be a lot more happier than peoples in many developed countries despite a lack of many things one associates with development.

Woww!...I didnt know about the second coming of this blog!...Good job!

Reg. this post, I think development means a social standing where you are not limited by any means in achieving /possessing/owning/doing what you want to achieve/possess/own/do. Economically deprived or not, in a developed state or a country, a man can do what he wants or he can possess what he wants bounded by financial limits to an extent.
